Understanding the Black Trans Community

Transgender people, and particularly transgender women of color, are disproportionately affected by hate violence. Sadly, the tragedy of these incidents is often compounded by reporting that does not respect (or even exploits and sensationalizes) the victim's gender identity. Because of this, we need to be sure that we are properly informed and educated and understand the ways we can be advocates to make a difference. Come hear Lady Ashley from QTPOC (Queer and Trans People of Color) speak to us on these issues. Stop by the Engage Room for a brochure or click on the link below for more information.

Congregational Meeting
Jul

12:00 PM12:00

Congregational Meeting

Because we are a congregational church, major decisions of the church are made by a vote of the full congregation, not just the leadership. Therefore, on July 15, after an 8-week period of discernment, we will gather for a time of decision-making and setting a course for our future.

Please make plans to join us on Sunday, July 15, immediately following worship for a Special Congregational Meeting. We will be voting on the which of the 3 options offered by the Board of Directors to select as our path forward. A quorum is needed, so your attendance is very important.

As a reminder, the three options presented by the Board of Directors are as follows:

1. Begin an active search for a building where we can try to maintain current staffing and programming.

2. Run a 1 million dollar, 3-4 year capital campaign that will reduce our debt on our current building to a manageable level.

3. Make staff and program reductions to balance the budget in an effort to afford the current building.

Click Here for the detailed agenda for the Special Congregational Meeting.

* If you missed the previous forums and wish to view the recording, email the church at info@mccgsl.org with a request for the video, and a link to the recording will be provided to you.

Congregational Forum

12:00 AM00:00

Congregational Forum

Because we are a congregational church, major decisions of the church are made by a vote of the full congregation, not just the leadership. Therefore, on July 1, we gather for three main purposes as we work toward a time of decision-making.

First, the Board will share what they have been hearing in feedback since our previous forum. Second, the Board will give a bit more detailed information about each of the three options presented for the congregation to consider. Finally, there will be an open time of sharing for the congregation to hear from one another. The Board wants to allow space and time for this important dialogue between the members of the congregation in advance of the July 15 Congregational Meeting. We hope you will prioritize this forum and the Congregational Meeting.

Again, the three options under consideration are:

1. Sell our current building and purchase a new smaller building that is more manageable for us.

2. Run a 1 million dollar, 3-4 year capital campaign that will reduce our debt on our current building to manageable level.

3. Reduce our staffing to one pastor with limited part-time support staff in order to be able to afford our current mortgage costs.

* If you missed the previous forum and wish to view the recording, email the church at info@mccgsl.org with a request for the video, and a link to the recording will be provided to you.

Pray With Me

In Scripture, Jesus modeled prayer for us in what we call the “Lord’s Prayer” or the “Our Father.” Now through Sunday, May 20th, Pastor Wes will be preaching about the types of things that Jesus was teaching us about prayer in his example. This series invites us all to join Christ in prayer: “Pray With Me.”

As we learn and experience more about The Lord's Prayer in worship, this program will be an additional way to engage in the practice of prayer and reflection each day. This will be done online so all you have to do is commit to it and have a phone or computer handy. Try daily prayer for these 7 weeks and see what a difference it makes in your life.

Seeing Clearly

Join us as we do a book study on  Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes: Removing Cultural Blinders to Better Understand the Bible to help us see the Bible more clearly.

What was clear to the original readers of Scripture is not always clear to us. Because of the cultural distance between the biblical world and our contemporary setting, we often bring modern Western biases to the text. For example:

  • When Western readers hear Paul exhorting women to "dress modestly," we automatically think in terms of sexual modesty. But most women in that culture would never wear racy clothing. The context suggests that Paul is likely more concerned about economic modesty--that Christian women not flaunt their wealth through expensive clothes, braided hair and gold jewelry.
  • Some readers might assume that Moses married "below himself" because his wife was a dark-skinned Cushite. Actually, Hebrews were the slave race, not the Cushites, who were highly respected. Aaron and Miriam probably thought Moses was being presumptuous by marrying "above himself."
  • Western individualism leads us to assume that Mary and Joseph traveled alone to Bethlehem. What went without saying was that they were likely accompanied by a large entourage of extended family.

Biblical scholars Brandon O'Brien and Randy Richards shed light on the ways that Western readers often misunderstand the cultural dynamics of the Bible. They identify nine key areas where modern Westerners have significantly different assumptions about what might be going on in a text. Learn to read Scripture as a member of the global body of Christ.

The cost is $20, which includes the book.

Holy Conversations on Tuesday, February 20

Join Rev Lillie at her home on Tuesday, February 20 for a Holy Conversation about our future.

2018 is an important year for our church and denomination as we celebrate 45 and 50 years of doing ministry in St. Louis and around the globe. These important markers offer an opportunity to appreciate all that we have done while simultaneously, expecting that God is ready to give us a new picture of our future.

Pastors Wes and Lillie will be inviting all of you in groups of 10 to come to their homes and have Holy Conversations about the future of MCCGSL. What are your hopes and dreams for this community of faith? What are you most passionate about in your life, and where does that intersect with your faith? Who do you believe God is calling us to be in this new season? All of these questions and more, invite us to pray, share, listen and discern so that our future together is all that God has imagined for us.
