The idea of the Trinity - a Triune God - Three beings in One is mysterious and perplexing, perhaps by design. Maybe the confusing nature of a God in three forms is intended to draw us into a sense of awe and reverence where we know the power of a God who created the world, knowing all; we sense the quiver of the wise, creative, compelling Spirit who nudges us toward good and right decisions; and we call upon the person of Jesus who is the embodiment of human and Divine perfection able to be compassionate and challenging; gentle and angry; loving and protective.
In a world where God's name is used to invoke violence, make enemies, and create division, the Spirit of Wisdom is called upon to intercede, guide through a still, small voice, and advocate. Perhaps it is always a dance of at least two—the power of God and the guidance of Wisdom. The Trinity has made most sense to me when described as a dance. Sometimes we need the courage to stand for what is right in the face of our fears; other times we need the gentleness of compassion to help us forgive or offer grace. Always, it is a dance of two. Always, we can look upon the person of Jesus for guidance in what to do in the corners we find ourselves in, the challenges of our day, and the challenges of our lives.
In the days to come, may we find a balance between justice and grace, tenderness and challenge, work and rest, despair and joy. This balance is so beautifully embodied in the video linked below, “Cloudless” by Hubbard Street Dance. May we lean into the dance between the human and divine, between the dance between God and the Spirit.
The world is heavy with war, violence, and degradation all over the world. From a SCOTUS decision that makes it legal to deny life-saving Gender Affirming Care to a Middle East embroiled in daily bombings, despair could seem the only faithful response. But here we get to call upon the dance of the Trinity to show us where to find hope -- for one to give us power, for one to give guidance, for one to lead by example. So let us not tire in the work that is ours! Let us ensure trans people get the care they need and deserve. Let us study war no more. Let us remind ourselves that no one is free until all are free, as we remember the story of the last slaves to finally be free on June 16, 1865. Let us recommit to ensuring the rights of all who seek refuge upon this stolen land that we now steward.
